性狀 不溶于水。根據需要分為長纖維（0.75-1cm）和中纖維素（0.4-0.75cm）。有耐酸、堿性能。為熱和電的絕緣體。有毒。經流行病學調查表明，石棉對人有潛致癌危險性。  
貯存 密封保存。
用途 實驗室中過濾及流體通道中的填充料。也用作隔熱材料、粘合物、火爐及熱汽管被覆物、過濾介質、耐火手套及衣物、閘帶等。
