IFM易福門激光傳感器工作時，先由激光發射二極管對準目標發射激光脈沖。經目標反射后激光向各方向散射。部分散射光返回到傳感器接收器，被光學系統接收后成像到雪崩光電二極管上。雪崩光電二極管是一種內部具有放大功能的光學傳感器，因此它能檢測極其微弱的光信號，并將其轉化為相應的電信號。 常見的是激光測距傳感器，它通過記錄并處理從光脈沖發出到返回被接收所經歷的時間，即可測定目標距離。IFM易福門激光傳感器必須極其地測定傳輸時間，因為光速太快。

車輛寬高的超限檢測
采用IFM易福門激光傳感器進行快速測量，利用PC工控機和可視化編程軟件VB的網絡內核與傳感器進行數據的實時傳輸及處理，同時還設計了界面友好的上位機控制軟件。現場試驗數據表明，該系統實時性好、測量精度高，具有一定的實用價值。
高速公路收費站
用于高速公路收費站，以進行車輛的計數及安全保護。馬來西亞Teras公司就已將上百套IFM易福門激光傳感器應用于其手動和自動收費站系統。IFM易福門激光傳感器采用飛行時間（TOF）測量原理，可在檢測區域內形成4個平面，以對車輛進行檢測，同時，該產品還具有防追尾、車輛安全保護等功能。IFM易福門激光傳感器較之傳統光幕具有靈敏度高、性高、安裝方便、性價比高、穩定性強等優勢。
